Many birds that originate out of the Hunter area usually have a telephone number of who to contact.
Looking after a lost pigeon:
Water: Most lost birds are hungry and thirsty, Water is necessary before all else. Pigeons drink by suction so any water container should be at least 2.5 Cm (1 inch) deep. An open container something like an old margarine tub or similiar would be ideal.
While a thirsty bird will drink immediately, it also may not. a bird that has gone without water for sometime is not always itself. It may be so exhausted it may not realise water is in front of it. especially if the water container you use is different from the one it is familiar with. A trick I often use is to trickle a few drops of water from high into the water container to make a splashing sound.
When they hear that most birds will invariably head to drink.
FOOD
Pigeons are grain eaters. While park pigeons will eat bread, most domestic birds will have been raised on a multi-grain mixture and never seen a slice of it.. Its likely they will ignore it as a possible food. Instead of bread you might be feeding them something else from around the house. Popcorn (maize), rice split peas, barley, buckwheat (Kasha) Canary seed ETC. are all good first options to feed. THESE GRAINS SHOULD NOT BE COOKED BUT FED RAW. Water should also be provided since pigeons normally drink immediatly after eating.
What should I keep it in
Any container that a cat or dog can't get into will be fine. An old bird cage will hold a pigeon for a day or so with no problem. as will a cardboard box. a screen on top of such a box is better than simply closing the flaps since there will be enough light for the bird to see to eat and drink
A racing pigeon usually once it is rested will continue on its journey. You can assist it by giving it water and some grain like wheat and rice. . It will continue on its journey in a day or two.
